RHAPSODY will be issuing a new mini-CD, entitled "The Dark Secret", on May 29 through Magic Circle Music/SPV. The group's as-yet-untitled new full-length album will follow in September. "The Dark Secret" track listing: 01. Unholy Warcry (short version)* 02. Thunder Mighty Roar* 03. Sacred Power Of Raging Winds 04. Guardians Of Destiny (English version)* 05. (T.B.C.) * Titles will not appear on the upcoming studio album The mini-CD will be packaged with a limited edition bonus DVD containing "Making of" footage for the new album (incl. interview sequences with Christopher Lee) and a 5.1 Mix of "Unholy Warcry" (short version). As previously reported, RHAPSODY's new album will feature a very special appearance by acclaimed actor Christopher Lee ("Star Wars - Episode 2: Attack of the Clones", "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", "Gremlins II", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"). Mr. Lee is no stranger to music and recording studios as he is a classically trained opera singer himself. He will be providing a powerful narration on the forthcoming self-produced CD of the Italy-based group. Among other well-known narrators and London actors, Lee will guide the listeners in the role of a king through a unique saga invented by RHAPSODY's founding members Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli. As a special surprise, Mr. Lee's daughter Christina Lee will also appear in the part of a warrior princess. Incidentally this will mark the first time father and daughter will work together. RHAPSODY's new CD is being recorded in four different studios in Europe with appearances by more than a dozen international guest soloists. Also appearing on the album will be the entire Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra from the Czech Republic as well as a 50-piece choir. source : blabbermouth

"Music industry way off track with song and dance about falling sales Figures show that we're buying albums in record numbers, despite the internet 'freeloaders', writes Steve Cannane. The Australian record industry has just had its best year ever. But it doesn't want you to know about it. This month ARIA announced its sales figures for last year. In its press release, it talked about Delta, it talked about falling CD singles sales, it talked about the rise in DVD sales, but at no stage did it tell us it was the industry's best year ever. Why bury the good news? Record industry types aren't usually shy about success. But this time their success is a little embarrassing. For the past few years the industry has argued that file-sharing and CD burning is having a negative impact on sales. But, unfortunately, their own sales figures don't back up their arguments. ARIA's press release was slugged with a bizarre headline: "Music DVD continues its rise whilst CD singles slide further". A mixed year, you might think. Not so. It took a canny finance reporter, SBS's Peter Martin, to decode the spin. He had access to ARIA sales figures going back to the early 1980s. He worked out what ARIA knew but decided not to share: when sales cracked 50 million albums for the year it was the first time this had happened. And combined sales of all formats for last year climbed to more than 65 million for the first time. But that's just one year, I hear the record companies say. OK, let's go back to 1998. The year before an 18-year-old college dropout named Shawn Fanning wrote a file-sharing program called Napster, the software that kick-started the downloading boom. In that year Australian record companies sold 39.6 million CD albums. Five years later the figure had gone up to 50.5 million. That makes it hard to argue that downloading and CD copying has been killing sales." Follow this link to read more.

The new album "Laguz Within The Lake" will be released in April/May. For further infos and pre-orders please ask at info@plastichead.com Andrea is currently proof-reading the Norwegian translation of Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible... "My new album Laguz – Within The Lake: I’m not sure how I would describe my new songs. I feel a lot of Hagalaz’ Runedance is kept in the new songs, but I also think there are a lot of gothic influences, since 80’s gothic, industrial and synth pop inspired me very much. As a tribute to this era I have made a cover song of Lene Lovich’ s Bird Song, my most influential song. I was just a child when I saw Lene Lovich sing this song on TV. The ghostly song and her gothic appearance….and I was mesmerized. Samples of my new songs can be listened to on mp3 and the new lyrics can be found in the lyric section… I aimed to combine my music with my other artistic expressions and the photos and paintings are images and atmospheres that speak for the songs. The two drawings are taken from two graphic stories I am working on, I hope to display samples of them soon in this site…" Source : http://www.nebelhexe.com/

Hail the Duke for giving us this Savatage related news: Savatage will headline the Prog Power V festival in Atlanta, this September. (I think it is two nights. Sept. 16 and 17) Savatage wants to do something special for this show, so for this ONE TIME ONLY, Savatage will bring back Zak Stevens (vocalist) and Steve Wacholz (the original drummer) to play with them. THIS IS NOT A BAND CHANGE! IT IS FOR ONE TIME ONLY! Also, Johnny Lee Middleton (bass) will not be present at this show, for some reason (probably due to prior commitments), so Kevin Rothney (Circle II Circle; JOP) will be playing bass that night. If anyone lives in Atlanta, GO TO THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!! MORE SAVA-RELATED NEWS: The following is a direct quotation. I think it is from the Drummer of "Tage Mahal" : "Jon Oliva's -Tage Mahal" is now the official name for the solo project of Savatage mastermind, Jon Oliva. "Tage Mahal" will be performing a "sneak preview" of the new record at Prog-Power V in Atlanta, GA. on September 16 & 17. This is the premier metal festival in the US. Make your plans to be there and remember that this show sold out in under 2 weeks last year. Tickets go on sale May 1. Further information can be found at: www.progpowerusa.com "Tage Mahal" is currently in week 2 of recording. Jon is joined, both in the studio and on tour, by the former members of Circle II Circle: Chris Kinder, Kevin Rothney, Matt LaPorte and John Zahner. The album is scheduled for a late spring/early summer release. Further information regarding Jon Oliva's "Tage Mahal" can be found at the official site: www.jonoliva.net Duke sez: Isn't that a cool name for a Jon Oliva solo project? "Tage Mahal" as in "Taj Mahal" and "Tage" as in "Savatage" MORE SAVA-RELATED NEWS- Chris Caffery (guitarist from Savatage) is now working on a solo album. Unless plans change, it will be out this year, and it will have 2 discs (30 songs total). For more info, go to www.chriscaffery.com MORE SAVA-RELATED NEWS- New TSO album out this Christmas (supposedly). SAVATAGE NEWS: According to a recent interview with Jon Oliva, there will be a new Savatage album out in 2005. There will also be a DVD, and a huge tour and maybe other surprises as well. (it will be the 25th anniversary of the band, and they want to do something special). There was supposed to be a new Sava album out more recently (probably 2003). Jon had written a whole bunch of songs, but then he threw them away at the last minute. He said that the songs he had written were good, but that they sounded exactly like stuff he's written before. He does not want to give the fans a "Dead Winter Dead" part II, or a "Poets And Madmen" part II. He wants the new Sava-album to be fresh and different and amazing. I, for one, am happy that he is doing this. It will take more time for the album to come out, but it will be worth it in the end. If he had been a stupid sell-out artist, he would've said, "whatever, just put the album out, whatever gets me money." But he isn't doing that, he wants to give the band and the fans a great album! (note: apart from the Tage Mahal news, none of these are direct quotes)

Carol Tatum is hard at work writing the new Angels of Venice album. No song titles yet, but you'll be sure to see them here first. Also, Carol just finished shooting on the new Lenny Wolf video "Silhouette Paintings" from Lenny's forthcoming album, where Carol will also be playing harp. Lenny Wolf is the singer from the great 80's Metal band Kingdom Come, and this promises to be a stellar contribution to the world of Metal.

CD foreseen for springtime 2004 by Cruel Moon International / Cold Meat Industry - Sweden. Two years after the release of our last full-lenght Cd we are proud to announce 'SAPHIR' the new concept album. It will be inspired by the magical, symbolic and mystic nature of gardens. Gardens of all ages linked to different geographic areas (as the hanging gardens of Babylon, the Arabian gardens, the medieval hortus conclusum, the zen garden and the English romantic gardens) have been the starting point of our musical research. The garden has been often represented as an universal door to cross this dimension to enter the one of myth and dream. The harmony governing the elements composing a garden is the same governing the elements composing music and all of this creates beauty. In 'SAPHIR', nature and art are mixed together to contrast an environment and life-style mainly based on what is functional and productive; we focus our attention on the most precious gift the human being should never be obliged to renounce to, i.e. the freedom to dream and an aesthetic taste for life. Music will be rich and nuanced. Classic and flamenco guitars, romantic pianos, pads of atmospheric keyboards, noble sonatas, epic tunes, rich back vocals, Francesca's vocal broderies and a great use of eastern and classic percussions from darbouka, to bendhir, frame-drums, timpani, udu, cymbals and bells played by our new talented percussionist Riccardo Spaggiari. The precious booklet will contain numerous photos, the lyrics and some interesting writings about gardens. Songs : Azar, Outremer, Jardin de lune, The gentle sleep, Rue bleue, D'arc et d'harpe, De pourpre et d'argent, A green for her voice, Blood of cherries, Of asphodel. ... (Source ataraxia site)

Sweden's THERION will be issuing two albums, "Sirius B" and "Lemuria", on May 24 through Nuclear Blast Records. The CDs will be released separately to start with, but will be made available in a single double-CD package within a couple of months of the original album release. According to a post on the band's web site, "This release will be pressed as much as people buy it during these two months and after that what ever left in stores and distribution channels can continue to sell as long as it lasts. You can consider this special offer as a present from THERION to the fans." With regards to how THERION came to record so much material this time around, a posting on the group's web site states, "After the touring was finished the band started to work on the album that [mainman Christofer Johnsson] was having in mind to make before the idea of a Nordic album had come up. Meanwhile there had been a lot of new songs written, so the 7 songs on the shelf had grown to a huge number of songs, which increased even more as time went by and also Kristian [Niemann, lead guitar] and Johan [Niemann, bass] contributed with several compositions to the pot. When the time felt right to start putting all the ideas and songs together to an album, they discovered that they had 55 (!) songs some of them being not entirely finished though. Discussions were made on how to do things with such a huge source of song material and they ended up deciding that they had enough good material for 3 (!) albums. They decided to record and release two of them simultaneously to catch up with their creativity (else there would probably be 55 more songs written by the time they get to record the third album in this trilogy). "The recording sessions started in Modern Art and besides instruments like drums, bass, guitars, balalaikas, domras and mandolines, the lead vocals and most of the opera soloist singers were recorded there. Then a huge symphonic orchestra, grand piano, harpsichord, some opera soloists and a 32 people strong choir were recorded in Prague. A real church organ was recorded at the oldest church of Copenhagen and finally they entered the Sun Studio with Denmark's finest producer Lars Nissen to make some additional recordings of Hammond organ and mellotrone before finally mixing this huge mass of songs there. "The results of 171 people involved with playing/singing and over 9 months of recording and mixing were finally put together and were named 'Lemuria' and 'Sirius B'. Scheduled to be released the 24th of May (2004), these twin records will hopefully convince people that THERION is a band that just have begun their musical odyssey and that the journey will both surprise, tease and astonish both their long time loyal fans as well as new listeners for many years to come. "As drummer Richard suddenly decided he didn't want to be a permanent member and had him self tied up with other projects, THERION decided to use a session drummer for the upcoming tours." "Sirius B" track listing: 01. Blood of Kingu 02. Son of the Sun 03. The Khlysti Evangelist 04. Dark Venus Persephone 05. Kali Yuga Part 1 06. Kali Yuga Part 2 07. The Wonderous World of Punt 08. Melek Taus 09. Call of Dagon 10. Sirius B 11. The Voyage of Gurdjieff "Lemuria" track listing: 01. Typhon 02. Uthark Runa 03. Three Ships of Berik, Part 1: Calling to Arms and Fighting the Battle 04. Three Ships of Berik, Part 2: Victory! 05. Lemuria 06. Quetzalcoatl 07. The Dreams of Swedenborg 08. An Arrow From the Sun 09. Abraxas 10. Feuer Overtüre/Prometheus Entfesselt THERION's last studio CD, "Secret of the Runes", was released in 2001. (source : perpetual motion board)

PARADISE LOST have parted ways with drummer Lee Morris due to "personal and musical differences." No replacement has been named as yet, although the new album will continue to be recorded as previously planned. "We are sorry to see Lee go, and wish him all the best for the future," the band said in a statement. Morris added, "I think it was always going to be difficult integrating myself into an already established set-up, and although we have always had a varying degree of opinions, attitude and ethics on things over the last nine years, we have usually always managed to find a happy medium. However, I think that over the last year, the divide has really grown to a point where compromise is no longer really an option for any of us to maintain a healthy working relationship. I have complete respect for the band on this decision at this stage in their career, and I want to wish them every success on the forthcoming album and thank them for the good times. As for me, I'm not sure what the future has in store yet, but I do believe that all things in life happen for a reason and as one door closes another opens, so here's to new beginnings." Lee Morris can still be contacted by emailing: lee@paradiselost.co.uk As previously reported, PARADISE LOST are tentatively scheduled to enter the studio in April with producer Rhys Fulber (FEAR FACTORY, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY) to begin recording the follow-up to 2002's "Symbol Of Life", tentatively due before the end of the year through G.U.N./BMG Records (in Europe). "Symbol Of Life", PARADISE LOST's ninth studio album, was produced by Fulber and was released in the U.S. through Koch Entertainment. Source : blabbermouth

HEATHEN - www.heatheninc.com Now RECOVERED - Bay Area's Heavy Metal HEATHEN Back For More... San Francisco, CA, March 8, 2004 - Long awaited third recording from the Bay Area's heavy metal band HEATHEN scheduled for release on March 31, 2004. Titled RECOVERED, the band began this project in 1992, but tracks remained archived and unfinished until 2003 when, with the help of engineer and co-producer Rob Beaton, the salvaged early recordings were completed for the new 9 song disc. Covers of Death on Two Legs by Queen, Holy War by Thin Lizzy, Hellbound by Tigers of Pan Tang, Eye of the Storm by Sweet Savage are clear indicators why this band was one of - if not the - best bands to come out of the 80's thrash metal days. The newest original track, In memory of?.written and dedicated to former band member Randy Laird and his girlfriend, as well as lead vocal David White's brother Jeffrey whose untimely losses occurred in 1991 has deep personal meaning to the band members. The remaining songs that make up this full-length album are tracks from Heathen's Opiate of the Masses demo, the pre-production to their 1991 release Victims of Deception. These include Hypnotized, Opiate of the Masses, Timeless Cell of Prophecy and Mercy is No Virtue. The band wanted to include these tracks to preserve and to share with the hardcore fans around the world. Recovered is just a taste of what is to come, the band is currently writing what will soon be a collection of all new and all original songs for its up coming release in the near future! The bands first release Breaking the Silence debuted in 1987 to great reviews and garnered heavy airplay followed by a US tour. The video for single Set me Free debuted on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, giving the band greater exposure and is found now in rotation on VH-1's Metal Mania. Followed up by 1991's critically acclaimed second release Victims of Deception the bands sound was noticeably heavier and more intelligent. After reforming in 2001 for benefit concert Thrash of the Titans in San Francisco, the band was invited to attend Wacken 2002 open air concert in Hamburg, Germany. Re-energized after their return, the band went back into the studio to pick up where they left off resulting in the upcoming release of Recovered. Limited Edition signed Digipacks available on Heathen's website www.heatheninc.com "This is the chance to get a glimpse of Heathen of yesterday, today and tomorrow," said lead singer Dave White about Heathen Uncovered, an extended play DVD to closely follow the CD release. It features a new music video, behind the scenes rehearsal footage, in-depth interviews, photo gallery and lots of Heathen uncovered. Pre-orders are available from www.heatheninc.com mid-March. The band would like to thank you all for your support, and would like to hear from you, visit Heathen at www.heatheninc.com, or email at heatheninfo@astound.net or write to us at Heathen 1860 Cannon dr. Long-running Canadian thrashers ANNIHILATOR have set a May 24 European release date through Germany's AFM Records for their new album, "All For You". A five-song EP, entitled "The One", will surface on April 26, and will include two bonus video clips. As previously reported, "All For You" (view cover here) marks the recording debut with the group of new singer Dave Padden, who replaced previous vocalist Joe Comeau last June. The album also features a return appearance by drummer Mike Mangini (EXTREME, STEVE VAI) following the departure of Randy Black (PRIMAL FEAR) in early October. "All For You" track listing (not final sequence): 01. All For You 02. Weapon X 03. The Nightmare Factory 04. The One 05. Demon Dance 06. Rage Absolute 07. Both Of Me 08. Bled 09. Dr. Psycho 10. Holding On 11. The Sound Of Horror Commented mainman Jeff Waters in a recent online posting: "[The song 'Weapon X'] is probably the most brutal ANNIHILATOR song EVER written. I honestly would compare it to 'Battery' by METALLICA ? and I would NEVER ever try to compare something I did with a classic tune like that unless I could back I up. Dave, Mike and I can! "The song 'All For You' will 'probably' be the single as it is one of those darn tootin' tunes that you will hear once and NOT be able to forget the chorus!" With regards to the songwriting process for the new album, Waters said, "I demoed 18 songs [using a drum machine]. Weeded out the weakest ones and then got Dave/Mike to do their stuff over the 11 I picked. It was [actually] 12, but one was noticeably weak ? could [have] made it on any other CD, but not this one." Holland's Karmageddon Media (formerly Hammerheart Records) has set "Zero Tolerance" (view cover here) as the title of the upcoming collection of unfinished recordings made by late DEATH/CONTROL DENIED frontman Chuck Schuldiner, due in Europe on March 22. As previously reported, Chuck, who passed away in December 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor, began work on the sophomore CONTROL DENIED album (under the working title "When Machine and Man Collide") but never managed to complete the effort before his health quickly deteriorated in the months leading up to his tragic death. The remaining members of the group ? bassist Steve DiGiorgio, vocalist Tim Aymar, guitarist Shannon Hamm, and drummer Richard Christy ? subsequently announced their desire to complete the CD and release it in Chuck's memory, but legal hassles between Schuldiner's family and Hammerheart Records (to whom Chuck was signed at the time of his death) put the entire project on hold. Schuldiner's mother Jane has issued several statements over the course of the last few months denouncing the label's plans to release the incomplete recordings without the family's consent, going so far as to threaten to make any recordings released by Karmageddon available as a free download on Chuck's official web site, EmptyWords.org. AYREON, the brainchild of Dutch guitarist Arjen Lucassen (ex-BODINE, VENGEANCE), will release their latest CD, "Ayreon: The Human Equation", in Europe on May 24 through InsideOut Music. The U.S. will receive the album one day later (May 25). Release dates for other countries will follow shortly. A single (view cover here) containing the radio edit of the song "Day Eleven: Love" plus the full album track "Day Two: Isolation" will precede the album. According to AYREON's official newsletter, "with the exception of 'Actual Fantasy', AYREON albums have never before featured bonus tracks because Arjen always felt that extra songs would ruin the flow of his stories that always have a clear beginning and end. "While working with singers in the studio however, Arjen suddenly had the idea to ask some of the vocalists participating on 'Ayreon: The Human Equation' if they would like to sing on an extra track. And they did... sang these vocals on the spot ? with amazing results! That left Arjen with one problem... These songs should be released somehow! "Therefore, included on the single will be two cover versions as extra tracks. One is a stunning rendition of LED ZEPPELIN's 'No Quarter' sung by Devon Graves, Magnus Ekwall, Eric Clayton and James LaBrie. And the other is a very powerful and moving version of DAVID BOWIE's 'Space Oddity' sung by Eric Clayton. The single will go on sale April 19, 2004 in Europe ONLY." Source : blabbermouth

"Before embarking on this summer's Ozzfest, the ethereal Italian six-piece LACUNA COIL will complete a national U.S. theatre tour alongside P.O.D., BLINDSIDE and HAZEN ST. The major market trek will kick off on May 1 and run though mid-June, hitting over 40 cities. With sales of their new album "Comalies" already surpassing the 60,000 Nielsen SoundScan mark and the P.O.D. tour preceding Ozzfest, LACUNA COIL should soon be well-known as a leading force in modern rock. The commercial radio support surrounding "Heaven's A Lie" has been nothing short of phenomenal. The hit single is currently being played at over 70 active rock stations throughout the U.S., while the group's sales continue to climb each week. The track's video has achieved similar success as "Heaven's A Lie" was not only the first "metal" video to be featured on Fuse's "Oven Fresh" program (a weekly viewer's choice competition), but also the first to win beating out such acclaimed mainstream acts as BRITNEY SPEARS, MAROON 5 and PINK.
